Together with two WPAs I created a dual-purpose handbook used in all 150 sections of First-Year Writing at the University of Minnesota, which services 3600 students/year. The handbook unifies UMN's composition courses by providing a common approach. That approach, briefly, is as follows:
"This class is not about a mythical 'One Right Way' to write. Instead, it's about getting involved in writing as both a person who thinks about writing and the work it does in various settings... Writing, in this view, can 'take on' conversations in two senses--both adopting and challenging the forms of writing valued in the academy."
First published in 2016, the updated and revised fourth edition is in use for the 2019-2020 academic year.
